Signs Along the Burlington

For more than ten years folks have been taking material home to read from five boxes along the Burlington Northern train tracks going into Chicago, Illinois. Materials placed in the boxes include Signs and Liberty Magazines. Recently, the book, "Ten Commandments Twice Removed," has been placed there, too.

The materials have been placed there by Lynne Netzel and her husband, Edward, who attend the Downers Grove Adventist Church.

"We’d like to expand this ministry . . . Owning a box is something like owning a condo. sometimes the city maintains the outside, and we maintain the inside. Some of the boxes are rented from the city. Some require payment of a fee to place them . . .  and we add stuff to them, " stated Lynne in a recent e-mail. "We’d like to have ten boxes, one each in LaGrange, Western Springs, Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, and possibly west Hinsdale or Brookfield."

The Netzels visit the boxes once a week or so, placing only a few magazines and books in them. "I find that this works out quite well," she added.

Who pays for the magazines and the cost of the boxes, which when new can range from $100 to $300 each? "We’ve supported this ministry since its beginning," Lynne responded. "Funding for it is run through the local church, and many others now help with this ministry."
